Architecture

Prague

1620 - 1780

When introducing the architecture of Prague, it is absolutely necessary to mention the Baroque style. The Baroque art of the peak period is absolutely dominant in Prague (1700-1750).

The works of this period give a tension, movement, and dramatic impression. Therefore, this form of art is also called “dynamic” or “radical” Baroque style.

The Baroque style is almost everywhere in Prague, and you can see it on the facades of the church, in the palaces, and even in the houses of the Old Town and the Lesser Town. The exceptionally beautiful Baroque sculptures can be found in the famous Royal Garden.

The most outstanding Baroque architects are clearly Kryštof & Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer as for sculptors are Brokoff and Braun and his family. The most outstanding Baroque painters are Karel Škréta and Petr Brandl.

Do you know? The word “baroque” actually comes from the Portuguese and French word “barroc”, which means “irregularly shaped pearls”.
